Unfortunately, I only would need cookies (did anyone see the weight loss above?). Really, I could maybe buy the ritz, cookies (for the kid--in me), microwave popcorn, Breyer's or Klondike (what would you do for a Klondike bar?) and Capri Sun. Not enough to buy ten of anything. As possible side deals, colgate whitening is $1.67 (there may be coupons) and softsoap (I think it is less elsewhere). If you follow the drugstore game, you will probably get the toothpaste and softsoap for free.

Stater Bros:

T Bone Steak (any size) $3.77/lb
Boneless pork loin chops (any size) $1.97/lb
Foster Farms Chicken Half Breasts (family pack) $.99/lb
Strawberries $1.99/lb (fresh)
White Corn 3/$.99
Marie Callenders Meals $1.88
Northern or Brawny $5.99
Welch's Juice or Juice Cocktail $1.99
Stouffers Entrees $1.99
Farmland Deli Ham (coupon) $2.99/lb
Red Baron Frozen Pizza 2/$5
Corn Tortillas (Mission) $1.29 (various flour and corn)
Flap Meat $3.99/lb
Pork Shoulder $.99/lb
Bulk Bacon $2.49/lb
Large Red Delicious Apples $.99/lb
Fresh Express Salad 2/$3
Cauliflower $.99/lb
Red Seedless Grapes 2 lb/$3

Safeway
Oroweat Bread $1.99 w/store coupon
Lucerne Butter $1.99/lb w/store coupon
Progresso Soup b1/g1 free
Broccoli $.99/lb
Saltines $1.29 Saturday and Sunday Only
Nature Valley Granola Bars 2/$3 Saturday and Sunday Only
Stawberries $1.99 Saturday and Sunday Only
Safeway English Muffins 6 ct $.99
Colgate or Crest Toothpaste $.99 4.6-6.4 ounce tube
S&W Canned Beans $.99
Daisy 8 oz sour cream $.99
Safeway Artisan Filone Bread $.99
Red Baron Singles $1.99 w/store coupon
Romaine, Green or Red lettuce $.99 each
Zucchini or Yellow Squash $.99/lb

Check couponmom.com for unadvertised deals.

Based upon the list above, I may have:

Sunday - carne asada, grilled corn, salad
Monday - pasta with tomato sauce and sausage (from the freezer)
Tuesday - seafood (freezer), zucchini, sauteed cauliflower
Wednesday - Sauteed Pork Chops, pasta primavera
Thursday - Tri tip, corn, squash
Friday - T-bone, potatoes, salad

Most of the food for the above menu is directly from the loss leaders at each store.

By the way, if you live near a Henry's, Sprouts or similar store, check out their produce prices. It was so expensive (almost $100), that I proclaimed I could sew and would perform my own alterations the next time.

Eighteen months later, I am on my second sewing machine. Have made two blouses, multiple pajama pants and shorts (very easy), two skirts (one started as a pair of pants) . . . I'm still learning but, have had some successes. My thought is that if I can wear it in public without embarrassment, it is a success!

It's fun and allows me to express myself with a lasting, tangible item.

Right now, I have about 15 patterns to work on and a LOT of fabric. I have gotten some great deals on fabric. I started cutting out a skirt today (Vogue 8603) which is adorable. I found the pattern on sale for $3.99 and the material cost $4.21. It is a tweed in black/white fabric. From a distance, it looks grey. It should be extremely cute once finished.

Anyway, I have a stockpile of most toiletries so, I have not been shopping as much. Plus, it is premiere week for GA and I am preparing for that show!

Be frugal,

Frugal JD

Being a landlord is no joke.

Especially when you are in a partnership. Partner rented to a couple (below the rate we agreed upon) that I thought was sketchy at best. They even had a cat. Um, I helped install the hardwood floors so, I seriously had a vested interest.

Apparently the cat was the best tenant of the bunch. Somehow this group broke the toilet. Like broken the porcelain bowl . . . I have no idea how that happened and I do not want to speculate but, let's just say that it took a special talent.

When you leave a rented unit, clean. I will charge a cleaning fee. When this group moved in, I provided a laminated list of appropriate cleaners and even gave care instructions for the floors. Too bad that nothing was cleaned. The tub was stopped up and black (it was a new, white tub). It was so dirty that it was black. The people lived in the unit for less than a year. There was a broken bedroom door . . . The oven was never cleaned . . . the floors were so bad, I wore shoe covers . . . and they had the nerve to ask for all of the deposit. If a full deposit is to be returned, the unit must be left in good condition.

In other news, the recession is great for food discounts. I have inexpensive lunches 3-4 days per week. It's great. For a bit, I was spending $15-20 per lunch and that is too much for lunch. With all of the deals, I am below $10 per day (sometimes below $5).

Happy Summer,
Frugal JD

Ikea Lost Me For Life

Not that it was the only place to shop but, occasionally I would stop there. I simply wanted a clothes dryer (for sweaters and shirts). I found what I wanted, picked up a couple of other items and headed for the register. WTF!

At the register, there were long lines. I saw about 7-10 (wandering in and out) employees watching the lines. All of the lines were self service. ALL. Eight self service lines were each about six customers deep. And employees were standing around. There were certainly other available registers. All of them were closed and blocked.

You could say that the economy is bad. You could say that they didn't have enough staff. But, it is hard to explain why so many employees were standing and watching paying customers stand in line. There were even other self serve lanes -- all closed!

So, I get to walk through your huge showroom when I just need a few items, use a self-checkout, and wait in a long line for the privelege of buying at your store? I do not think so. I prefer not to stand in line or to use self checkout. If I have to stand in line, either I have selected the wrong time to shop or you need to adjust your staffing. If I have to use self-checkout, I expect the best items with a discount.

I have high expectations when I shop. Why shop at a place where you are not respected? By the way, I have had a retail shop. If you had to wait longer than 30 seconds in line, you received an automatic discount. That is simply appreciating your customer (you know, the one that keeps you in business).

Needless to say, I will not set foot in Ikea again.

Sincerely,

Frugal JD

Mid May - already?

It's mid May and I have so much going on. I have started resale shopping. Why? I spent too much time in the mall and left empty handed. I even left the state. Nothing in my bags until, I found the greatest resale shop. Too bad it is halfway across the country.

So, I am looking for a new one locally.

Working way too hard. I'm thankful to have a job, very thankful. I found an extra $1000 in my checking account. An extra $1000.

There are a million things I want but, not necessarily to spend that money. Speaking of that, where are the workout tapes? I have been to Target, WalMart, Costco and Sams and no workout tapes (none that I want).

No way should I be blogging while GA is on. Yeah, George is going into the Army (or some branch). I kind of tune out when the military is discussed.

Anyway, save and shop resale. Quality resale. I have to admit that the shop I visited tonight was not up to par. They had a lot of thrift shop merchandise. Anytime Banana Republic is your top brand . . . look at it this way. Across the street is a resale shop with better pricing and has new and very gently used clothing. The items ranged from $3-$1,000 but, the $1,000 piece was LV luggage. I spent $80 in that store and had an outfit. Across the street, I could have had an outfit that looked used. For the same price.

In Minneapolis, I found a great shop. They had a ton of merchandise that I wanted. I ended up with two new tops (tags and labels still attached). Grand total, $20. Trust me, values are there.

Buggies were eating my strawberries so, I had to move them. Something was sucking the juice out of my berries. I have had to toss at least a quart this month. Not happy. The radishes are all over the place. I am giving them away. Never let a 13 year old plant your garden.

Anyway, Happy Spring

It's A NEW DAY

The bushes are back in Texas. I can be proud of our President.

Our President can speak properly, conjugate sentences, and pronounce nuclear! He is not a "C" student.

He is a family man that has a loving wife and children and believes in putting them first. I am so excited.

On the money saving front, you must try Jamba's new oatmeal (search for a coupon). I say to ditch the brown sugar (too sweet). The blueberry was quite tasty. My kid tried to jack mine. He wanted a stupid juice drink. I had fuel to keep me satiated for the day. We normally make steel cut oats when we have oatmeal and add brown sugar and blueberries. This is similar but, I did not cook and do not have to clean. With the coupon, it is only a dollar! One dollar; swap meet prices!

Anyway, it is a new year. I have very little debt besides my educational loans. It needs to reset itself. Clip coupons, eat out less and conserve cash! The holiday season does not mean that you need to go into debt. Make gifts, give the gift of time or barter. Seriously.

I bought a ton of gifts from Hallmark on clearance (and with a coupon). Target's clearance section is skimpy for the holiday so, I am checking my alternate sources. Put a clearance item in a cute bag (also found on clearance) with tissue and you look like you did something special. You can be thoughtful and frugal.

The best gifts I ever received were:

a towel to wrap around my body after a shower

an afghan made by Grandma

recipes

I have to admit that I am somewhat crafty. I recently took a sewing class (at 25% off) and made pajama pants. Cut out two pieces of material, sew the crotch, sew the legs and hem. Instant gift. And fleece is on sale/clearance at most sewing stores. Some stores even have ready made pajama pants for around $7 each (fleece and thermal). I also make body creme (mango and/or shea butter with jojoba oil).

Okay, that's it for holiday gift ideas.

Frugal JD

I'm back . . . . been around the world or does it just feel that way

Man, what a week. President-Elect Obama! It's sad that I was too afraid to even hope for this.

Every time I watch the clip of Sherri Shepard on the View, I lose it. I rarely cry but, that has done it twice and I am tearing up just thinking about it.

Dude has his work cut out for him. The country is in shambles. Banks closing, businesses filing BK, homes being foreclosed. I actually found a home in the city I live in (IN CALIFORNIA) for $153,000. I haven't seen a home (with garage and fireplace) for that price in about ten years. It actually looked livable from the pictures. Now, I had to say that because I saw others that were priced higher that I would not use to house a dog.

Oh, back to my point. I just read Fresh's blog and he said that these are not the Huxtables, entertainers, sports figures . . . these are two people (Harvard Educated Attorneys) that worked hard and believed in each other. Can you imagine the belief Michelle had when her husband said he wanted to run for President? I want that kind of belief in my mate (which is why I am single).

I say that I am single because I am still a bit too selfish for that. Great atmosphere. Lots of work and it is work but, I like what I do. I know that I help people by doing my job well.

Yes, the company is known for boobs and wrinkle serums but, we do MANY other things.

Anyway, my boss has morphed into someone unrecognizable. I used to be impressed with his behavior and thoughtfulness.

Over the past month, he has done several things to make me feel completely betrayed. First, an employee left our department to go to another group. He sent an email to our entire department that she was leaving and I would absorb her work (without telling me first). I was annoyed but gathered from his email that if no one willingly left our group, I would lose a job (last hired, first fired). Then, he started playing favorites within our group. We are all in a small area so, it is obvious. I went on a vacation; I was told that I had to find my replacement. I found someone to cover for me. A week later, I had two co-workers go on vacation and I was told that I was covering for them. Okay, a double standard. I intended to address it at bonus time! Yes, a girl is all about getting paid. Then, they returned and two days later, he took them to a taping of Deal or No Deal (during the work day)! It was a secret. No one in our group was to know. There are ten of us. He took 2 during the workday, after they returned from 2 week vacations!

This man has never left the building without telling the entire group that he would be gone. This time, he disappeared without a word. When a co-worker asked him about the taping, he downplayed it and denied that the co-workers were with him. Sorry, but I saw you leave the building. I think he could be fired for this but, the dilemma is what to do?

Any tips?

He is an on-time God

I have been unemployed for almost four months. I have maintained a positive attitude (I do not know how) and been patient (me patient?).

Tomorrow, I start a position at a company that I have admired for years. Can't tell you the name because it is international but, the position meets most of my requirements.

International - I need a global focus. National is just not enough and the last company was only statewide.

Manufacturer - I adore working with scientists and other creative types. Plus, there is always the opportunity to learn about the product.

Legal Department - for now, I want to enhance my legal skills. Yes, I have over ten years of experience and a law degree but, I want to work for someone that I admire (possible mentor).

Values Employees- that is just not a phrase to repeat. I worked for a wonderful company that did monthly employee appreciation (the owners really appreciated the employees). I was spoiled and still steer business their way. The pay was LOW but they made up for it with the appreciation.

On site amenities - Give me a gym so that I can pretend to use it or a cafeteria. Some type of perks. This place is amazing (gym and fitness equipment, cafeteria and concierge).

There are so many other things I could say about this but, I continue to pray that I will follow His word and will and use this position to honor HIM. Somehow, I was able to give this to him and not worry. I was always fed, housed and able to do a little shopping.

I am so excited and nervous. I want to shine and prosper. And on that note, I am going to bed.

Be blessed,

Frugal JD

How I Effectively Use Coupons

Last time, I discussed how to make a grocery list. Now, for my big secret--coupons.

I love using coupons. I am thrifty, frugal and use La Mer. It is all about balance.

I subscribe to the Sunday newspaper. I live in a larger metropolitan area which has several newspapers from which to choose. I subscribe to the L.A. TI.MES. I got a great deal for $39 per year (Sunday only delivery) and they have the best coupon selection.

Every Sunday, I read the first section of the newspaper. In Southern California, the grocers add store coupons in this section. Occasionally they add them in separate flyers but, certain chains list them in this section every Sunday. They list things like Colgate Too.thpaste, Sale Price $2.50 less coupon $1.00 less double coupon $1.00, your final cost $0.50. This is why I shop at that chain and why I save 45-75% off each receipt. I have had similar experiences in Denver and in the midwest. Just read the newspaper a couple of times and you will see the pattern.

KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE
I cannot stress this enough. If you are young, or just starting out, try various brands. We recently found that the store brand fruit snacks tasted better to us and had less sugar than the national brands. Each local chain store uses the same manufacturer for their fruit snacks. They are frequently on sale for 30% of the price of the national brands. I recommend starting with the store brands for canned/non-perishable items and if they are not to your liking, move to the next brand until you find one that suits you.

Once you know which brands you prefer, look for coupons. Right now, I subscribe to 3 online coupon systems (you print the coupons you like) and I receive emails from Pillsbury and Kraft which include coupons.

Even though you know which brands you prefer, you may want to occasionally try other brands. Right now, I am furious that T.ide keeps changing their packaging and you actually get less product than before at a higher cost. I am trying other brands. Ultra my eye . . . let me get off my soapbox. But, check out other brands. Oh, my other little secret is cooksillustrated.com They have a wonderful listing of taste tests. They are the consumer reports of food. I switched ketchup brands because of their taste test (I save money and enjoy the flavor).

By now you are looking in your Sunday newspaper and have a pile of coupon inserts. What do you do with the inserts?

You clip only for the items you use, can afford or are very interested in trying. If you see a great coupon for something you use often, I recommend buying additional newspapers. The reason behind my logic is that if you need 6 rolls of toilet paper per month and those 6 rolls are less than $1 with a coupon, you should get 2-3 newspapers to ensure that you have a month's supply at the coupon price. If you do not use all of the coupons you have clipped, save them in an envelope near the area where you make your grocery list.

I save my inserts for 3-4 weeks after I recycle the rest of the newspaper. Why? I may have missed something. I frequently find that I am too optimistic in my clipping and have to go back and clip something later. When I clip coupons, I usually spend 5-10 minutes clipping and organizing. That's it. Before you read the newspaper, get a pen, paper and scissors. Then, you are ready to clip and add items to your list.

HOW TO STORE YOUR COUPONS

There are many organizers sold for insane amounts of money. I spent years keeping my coupons in a zip type storage bag. It worked and was inexpensive. I have graduated to keeping my coupons in a folder. A simple two pocket folder (used for school). I keep coupons which will expire during the current month or up to the 15th of the following month on the left side and all remaining coupons on the right side. Around the first of the month, I purge all expired coupons and move coupons to the left side as needed. Each Sunday when I clip, I add coupons to the appropriate side (unless I am using them to shop). I like this system because no one knows what is in the folder and it has a bit more organization than the clear bag.

For shopping I use an ordinary envelope. I have a divided coupon organizer but, rarely use it. It is too big and takes too much time. My list is at the front of the envelope. Coupons are organized behind the list. My categories are: Canned Items and Candy, Refrigerated Items, Frozen Items, Personal Care and Household Items. For example, flour coupons, crescent roll coupons, frozen pizza coupons, shampoo coupons followed by cleaning coupons. If I am in the center of the store in the cleaning products aisles, I do not have to sort through canned good coupons to get to what I need; I know that the coupons for cleaning items will be near the back of the envelope. Sometimes I place my coupons in the fold of the list (if I am using a full sized sheet of paper). It just depends on how many items you plan to purchase.

I will let you in on a secret:

GROCERY STORE SALES ARE ON A CYCLE
It is Super Bowl Season, guess what is on sale? Salad dressing, frozen pizza, sodas, beer and liquor, snacks, peanuts. The grocers know what we will be eating on Sunday. Around the holidays, baking items are on sale. During the summer, summer fruits and vegetables are on sale. Because of coupons and the holiday season, I stocked up on soda at a cost of about $0.02 per serving. I had so much soda, I gave it away.

Right now, I am feeding a family of four on less than $75 per week. This includes 3 meals per day for 3 adults and one child. Our cupboards are fully stocked, we are meat eaters so, that is 2-3 meals per day with a meat entree. Last night, we had t-bone steaks, french fries, sauteed zucchini and cake for dessert.

Next time, more online sources for sales and discounts,
Frugal JD

Options and How to Grocery Shop

First, I have to share this offer. I have the opportunity to use recently remodeled office space rent free. I can open my own business. Unfortunately, I do not know what to do (using that space). I did come up with other ideas . . .

After speaking with a very smart friend, I decided to share my method of grocery shopping. She hates to shop and I LOVE it. I love almost everything about cooking. She was shopping with coupons and had a hard time seeking brands to satisfy the coupons and was very frustrated with the entire process. Bells went off for me. I can share my tips with you (okay, with my future readers).

First Things First
What do you like to eat? Start with a list of foods you enjoy. Then, supplement that with foods you always want to enjoy at home but, never have the ingredients on hand. I know that list making is tedious but, if you just make a mental list, it helps.

Then, pull out your handy supermarket fliers to see what is on sale. When you look at the list, you will see items needed to make those foods you enjoy. Pick 2 or 3 (or more) of those foods and start your grocery list (this is better written). There are staples you should have on hand like bread, milk, butter, etc. A bowl of cereal or toast and jam makes a great breakfast or dinner. So, think of those things you always want in your fridge (I like milk, juice, butter, jam, eggs). If those items are in the fridge, I can make almost anything (if my pantry is stocked).

Once you have your written list, look at your coupons and check the expiration dates. If the items on your list (or something needed to complete a dish) is contained in those coupons and you will use the item paperclip the coupon to the list and add the item (I add a C beside items for which I have coupons) to the list.

By the simple act of making a list, you will remember most of the items when you get to the store. I forget my lists from time to time but, there is something about writing that list that keeps it in your head.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
This is the most important thing to remember, eat first. Do not go to the grocery store hungry. This is when I spend more than $50. Everything looks good and you pick up something to eat in the car . . . by the time you make it home, you can't make a meal. But you can certainly eat all the food while driving!

Here are a list of general items to stock the fridge and pantry:

Milk
Butter
Juice
Eggs
Jam
Peanut Butter
Salt and Pepper
Sugar
Flour (B)
Baking Soda (B)
Baking Powder (B)
Bread
Potatoes
Onions
Cheese
Meat
Veggies
Cereal or Oatmeal

With these items you can feed yourself for a week. Think about it--cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, apple and peanut butter for snacks, meat and veggies for dinner. If you want to get fancy, you can even make pancakes for breakfast, grilled cheese sandwiches, etc. The items with a (B) after them are intended for those that bake. Notice that I did not add vanilla or other extracts (that is advanced). I did not list a pre-made baking mix because of the additives. It is easy enough to blend the dry ingredients.

Next time, I will tackle my way of using coupons.

Happy Shopping,
Frugal JD

Happy New Year

Well, it is the new year and I still am not working. I am okay with the unemployment.

Bored as heck, but financially sound. I made some moves which removed over $2k from my monthly budget. I was awarded unemployment so, my bills are paid with a bit extra left over each month.

I am still plotting new ways to squeeze the heck out of a dime or make a dollar out of fifteen cents. Right now my F*!& you fund is only down $1000. That was the money spent on unexpected car repairs. For Christmas, I did really well. The kid was happy and spent 2 days in his bedroom playing with his gifts! I think I selected well for him.

I have a few opportunities that look promising but, do not want to settle just for a job. Yes, I really need health insurance but, more importantly, I need mental stimulation. I cannot write as if I am writing to a below average intelligence infant. Nor will I be threatened at every turn. Yes, the California workplace can be brutal. One day I will post a picture of the view that I wake to each day. It is amazing when sunny or cloudy.

Looking for paid mental stimulation,

On the stroll

Found Money is Nice at Christmastime!

Today, when I was bargain shopping, looking for my cheap eats, I found some cash. It was blowing in the wind. I saw about 5 people step over it. We are talking bills, not change.

When I was little, my brother and I found around $100 blowing in the snow. We got off of a warm city bus (remember when it was safe to ride the bus?) and ran for a block to pick up a bunch of $20 bills blowing in the snow. We gladly waited in the snow until a friend picked us up.

So, when I find money, I get all warm inside and remember the fun I had when I found money with my brother. So, it is only $7 but, it is more than I had before! At least I have 'earned' money this month!

On the stroll

P.S. By the way, I did try to find the owner but, I was the only person there when I picked it up and I did not see it fall from a pocket or purse. I only saw people step over it.

Cyber Monday, Where?

I heard all weekend about these fabulous deals for online shoppers that would be available on Monday only. Well, I did not see any new deals. It was the same old line that was fed to shoppers on Friday.

I checked my ING Direct account and was very happy. I wanted to buy something that I would need. I need a hair dryer. My blow dryer is missing the vent cover . . . I would like to dry my hair without worrying about electrocuting myself because something flew into the wrong end of the dryer. I was hoping that Ulta or Sally would have something . . . nothing.

I ended up buying a CD that I have wanted since last summer. It was cheaper on eBay than using the 40% off discount at Borders. I keep checking for jobs but, I am patient and know that He will provide.

Enjoy Cyber Monday!

On the stroll

Still unemployed.

Since it has been a week, I will fax deferrals for my student loans. Besides rent, they are my highest expense each month and without a steady income, I cannot afford it. Okay, without any income.

I have applied everywhere and am just waiting to get callbacks next week. I started reading What Color is Your Parachute? I have never read it and am hoping to get a bit of direction. If I could test hair and beauty products for $100K per year, I would do it. However, law school did not prepare me for that.

Anyway, on to saving money. I am about to cash my final check and add it to my ingdirect account. That should allow me to gain some interest.

I did something different this year for the Thanksgiving meal. I bought the meat and my friend (a regular at holiday meals) bought everything else. I spent less than $25 for a turkey breast and 8 pound ham. So, I think I had the better end of the deal. He bought the potatoes, green bean casserole ingredients, mac n cheese, bread, etc. However, since this is a man, we only had one can of cranberry sauce. We LOVE cranberry sauce so, that did not work well.

Today, I am having a no buy day. I'm still in my nightgown and just did not need anything. I have a couple of gifts for my son and he wants one other thing; dominoes. This fit into my monthly budget so, I bought 2 of the 3 things he wanted already. Should be a very good Christmas.

On the stroll

Great time of the year

Well, I lost my job the other day. I'm not sure what happened and the issue will be resolved in litigation (or mediation). The sad thing is that I had an interview scheduled with another department today and we kept the interview. I guess that is all I should say about the situation until it is resolved.

The good part in all of this is that I have a plan to get me through the next few months. My F - U fund is not fully funded but, if nothing else, I can quickly get a retail gig to provide us with the basics.

Thanks to an ownership interest in an apartment building, I have a couple of places to move into at a minimal cost. I may try an alternative living arrangement like the one suggested by the simple dollar. I know someone that is having a HUGE financial crunch and by moving in, I can assist. Between that and deferring my largest school loan, I will save over $2k per month.

By the way, I need to send a shout out to my girl, she passed both the NY and NJ Bar! If we were the drinking kind, I would buy her a few rounds!

On the stroll

Planning

First, I must say thank you to all Veterans! Today was as good as last weekend!

Well, I didn't need much. Would love some fresh fruit but, seems in short supply. I ended up with bananas and oranges. Due to my dental issues, I passed on the apples. I may go back though because I had the most amazing apple pie last night.

According to my receipt, I saved $28.39 and spent $26.77! I did not even use coupons for most of the items I purchased! I LOVE IT.

Right now, the savings are earmarked for my big baby boy's Christmas.

Thanksgiving is in just over a week. I have the turkey breast, fried onions for the green bean casserole, bakings goods for the desserts . . . and have watched Martha Stewart's Thanksgiving Special.

Her trick to use a lemon to make the turkey juicy works and does not leave lemon flavoring in the turkey meat.

Last night, I attended a potluck for my cooking class (I made potato leek soup). I had lamb for the first time and met an interesting group of people. It was so nice to talk to people that understood how little good food there is in California. Very interesting people--okay, I have to say it, why would a 50 year old man need a myspace page? yes, he is in the entertainment industry. Well, not so much when you don't shop.

Staying home, going to the movies, relaxing with friends. All save money!

Guess what I've done? All of the above. Have I shopped? Not really.

I really need a bucket. Simple, right? Not so much. Stopped at Target. Red buckets only. Great price of $1.49 but only in red. Red is not my color.

Hit the drug stores. $6.49 for a 1 gallon bucket. Red does not sound too bad right now. I will look at Lowes (I need to return some hardware) and if they do not have it at a decent price, will check WalMart.

I really need it to wash the car and mop the floor. But, with gas at $3.25 per gallon, is it worth an extra trip? I think I will improvise until I need something else from WalMart.

On the flip side, I needed to fill a prescription and had a nifty coupoon from C>V>S> to get at $25 gift card for a new or transferred prescription. The co-pay on the prescription was $5 and I have $15 left on my flexible benefits card so, I spent nothing to get $25. When C.V.S has a good sale on something I need, I can use the card or, I can save it for a Christmas present.

On the stroll

Bertoli Pasta and other musings

Today has been a long day. Busy at work. Had to rush home to feed the man sized 11 year old and am now relaxing. I needed to check the post office box and pick up some bread for the kid's lunch. Instead, I'm on the phone with his dad trying to bribe him into making the lunch. If I'm nice, maybe he will.

Anyway, those frozen Bertolli meals are good! We had the one with pasta and sausage along with a green vegetable and garlic bread and the kid is happy. We also have ice cream for dessert but, I'll wait until he is in the shower to have that treat!

I was so discouraged because I though that I was short for my 1-15 bills. When I did the math, I have extra and do not even need to touch the ing account! I truly thought that I needed to empty that sucker and borrow some more money. Made my day to see that I do not need to borrow, I have money in 2 interest earning savings accounts and I'm fine. As much as I think I have gone over the budget, I have remained on track!

In my daily exercise in frugality, I went to Target to get Dunkin Donuts coffee. When I grabbed the package, I saw the Maxwell House. I grind my own beans and make my coffee daily but, I decided to try the Maxwell House as it was less than half the cost of the Dunkin. So, I will have Maxwell House for the next month and $3 extra dollars in my pocket.

On the stroll

Vons is doubling coupons again (limited time)

Vons had really good sales this week but, they don't double coupons anymore. They bring it back a few times a year but, people complained that the lines were long because of people using coupons.

Well, now they do not have lines because no one shops at my local Vons unless it is to buy items on sale at REALLY good prices. Why? Their prices are HIGH.

Anyway, on my way to a more reasonably priced grocer, I saw the signs hanging that double coupons are back. WOO HOO.

So, I stopped in and for $30, had 7 bags of groceries. I had some things such as chips ($1.66 each), Bertoli frozen meals for 2 (so good and easy to make--$5.99), and assorted other items. Well, besides the chips, I had coupons for everything. Frozen veggies for $3.00 (2 boxes), four frozen pizzas for $3, Bertoli for $2.99. . . I'm pretty proud of the damages. I think I saved over 63% by using coupons.

I do not make any menus nor do I cook huge meals on weekends. I simply buy what we like. We are well fed and the cabinets are full. I do not make elaborate lists. I am antsy if I am in a store for longer than 30 minutes (including the checkout lane). By 2pm on a Sunday, I want my shopping complete for the week, unloaded and put away neatly. Now, if someone can give me some easy way to get a good movie on Showtime each Sunday at 2, that would make my day!

On the stroll

Bringing Lunch to Work is Good for the Budget

I was going overboard with eating out. Cold turkey, bought some cute little containers, researched bentos, bought a thermos. I was prepared. A month later, I've lost weight, am calmer and have disposable income. I was determined to find one this weekend. I think I drove over 150 miles looking for a stand under $150 with at least 2 shelves and taller than 24 inches. I think I would have more luck finding a leprechaun holding a four leaf clover.

So far I have hit liquidators, Costco, Target, furniture stores, Sears, Best Buy, Circuit City and nothing. Most places now sell the stand with the tv. Oh wait--I also went to Ikea and have checked Craigslist! Why is tht so hard to find?

Besides gas, I have not spent a dime. Necessities only (food and gas). Good for my bank account. Bad for the retail world.

Want to save some money? Look for something that you have wanted for a long time. Works every time for me. Want a blue suit? Go to the mall. You won't find a blue suit and you will become more determined and end up leaving with nothing. If I am just looking, I will spend $500 easy.

Still have no idea what to do about the tv stand,

On the stroll

Grocery Savings

Our local Albertsons had a great deal. I normally pass these by but, actually thought about it and wanted to go in on it with a friend. The deal was that you buy 10 items for $25 and the store gave $15 off. You ended up paying $10 for 10 items. Sounds good so far, right?

Well, I read the disclaimers a number of times. Essentially the only caution was that all items must be purchased in a single transaction. Sounds good so far. I quickly found 10 items that I wanted (a wide variety of items were included; frozen, chilled and canned). My friend did the same so, we decided to pay separately. At the checkout, I thought I was overcharged but, when I looked at the receipt, they took off the $15 once. There were no limits on the promotion. I went back and the store manager gave me the addtional $15 off. So, for 10 bags of food, I paid $27 (I did buy a few items not included in the promotion).

The bad thing is that the store does not double coupons. I had about 7 coupons for the 20 items I purchased through the promotion. So, I saved a ton and got several items for $0.50 (soup, break and bake cookies, snacks).

My friend went back yesterday (with coupons this time) and paid $6 for 10 items! He's learning.

I scanned the flyers last night and did not see any deals like that for the near future. I will keep my eyes out for baking goods because I try to buy spices, flours and other holiday baking goods just before Thanksgiving.

I am going to the mall at lunch today. I hope I can resist big spending.

On the stroll

Text Messages

I'm 36, I never thought I would communicate with friends via text messages. Once in a while is fine but, some people like to send 10 or more per day. Essentially, I have been forced to add a text plan to my cell. Of course, I have a very old plan with lots of minutes, rollover and free nights and weekends.

Originally I said that I would only add a text plan if the texts costs more than the plan. At the time, they were 5 cents each. I checked again last week and they were $0.15 each. So, ten would be $1.50. To add a plan, $4.99 per month. The plan includes 200 messages. Additional messages are discounted as well.

I have at least 3 friends that send texts so, I should be covered.

If only I could add nationwide coverage so that travel does not lead to EXORBITANT roaming charges. Of course, they will not offer that. To upgrade to national coverage would double (or more) my current plan. The good thing is that I am covered in CA, NV, AZ and somewhere else. It could be much worse.

I keep reminding myself that I am saving money by not having a landline. I'm at a seminar for the rest of the week. It took me 2 hours to get there this morning and 90 minutes to get home. It's 27 miles away! Then, the only parking is at the hotel for $15 per day. I'm being reimbursed but what the HECK! This is why I am considering leaving California.

I've been so good. No unncessary spending, no extravagant lunches. Only necessary items. I am under budget for the month.

This weekend, I spent less than $60 and I even bought meat. I hardly buy meat because I am only home on the weekend to cook it. Plus, I stash leftovers in the freezer for quick weeknight meals.

Sleep deprivation leads to impulse purchases. Completely unplanned. And somehow, I feel good aobut it!

I had a date. I wanted to look good but, be comfortable. I found Khaki's tht fit almost perfectly, a blue jacket (cotton) that fit beautifully and a purple top that works under suits or with jeans. Because I can wear it to work or for fun, I think it was a good deal.

I started the day with a garage sale with a friend. We only did the sale for about 90 minutes but, we both sold more than we anticipated. I think we made around $150 between us. We stopped because it was too hot, traffic dwindled and we were starving. I spent most of my earnings eating but, I cleaned my trunk, garage and provided items to someone that needed them at a fair price.

During the yard sale, we met a couple that had recently adopted their 7th child. I don't know how many were biological and how many adopted but we were so impressed by this couple. Adoption has been a goal of mine for a very long time. So nice to be reminded of it.

While I went over budget today (or ignored the darn thing), I also made some money with the yard sale. Because I have virtually eliminated the daily lunch ($10+ at a restaurant), I do not spend as much so, we're going to call it even.

On the stroll

Well past my bedtime

Last week, I had an insatiable desire to shop. This week, no desire at all. I feel that I have what I need. What a difference a week makes. I think it is the blog. Others can see what I am up to and keep me in line.

I just went over my budget for the remainder of the month and I will be about 400 under budget this month!

Here are a couple of tips:

If you buy books, sign up for a frequent buyer card (if it is free). I have a Border Rewards card and just bought a book that I wanted to read and it is not at a local library . . . after the discounts, it cost me $4.73! Originally $19.99!

I had a long conversation with a co-worker about store credit cards. She was against it because she knows she can't control her spending and an extra discount makes her spend more than intended. For me, it works -- well, it would if I would pay the darn thing off each month. However, being able to purchase 3 tops to wear under suits for $17 makes up for the interest charge (becuase of the 3 suits I purchased the month before). None cost more than $79 so, they were good deals. I know I am rationalizing but, if you pay them off each month, you can get better deals in some stores by having a store card.

This month, I am trying to do like Single Ma and put all discretionary expenses on a credit card (which will be paid off in full each month). This month is the trial. I am brown bagging it or skipping lunch. $10 per day is too much for food that I do not want to eat (more on that later). So, already my spending has dropped drastically.

Anyway, I am terribly sleep deprived,

On the stroll

Balance Transfers

Today, there were a few blog posts about Balance Transfers. Then, I received word that my new card has a balance transfer. I had forgotten that I wanted to transfer the balance to that card. That is a good thing for my budget. I will save about $40 per month in interest charges!

Yes, I have been a bad girl. At one time I had over $25,000 in debt. When my baby boy was born, I decided to get my stuff together and pay it off rather than add to the debt. Can I just say that I loved Barneys and Needless Markup and expensive cosmetics? Designer suits every day and getting cash from one card to pay another. Yes, I was dangerous.

Now, my total debt, excluding educational loans is less than $10K. That includes a car! I can pay that off in a year. I will add at least $200 per month into my high yield savings account and once I build my $1000 nest egg, pay those bills down.

I probably keep repeating myself but, I want to remind myself of my goals or I will just blow it off and increase the consumer debt.

My frugal tip of the day is freecycle. Freecycle is wonderful. The very item you need is probably being stored in someone's garage, gathering dust. And guess what? They will probably give it to you. I've given away school uniforms, books and movies.

On the stroll

October 1

two weeks ago, I started a savings account at ING direct. Ask for a referral, I heard that they were offering $50 to start an account with a $250 deposit. Yes, I would get a referral of $10 but, you would get $50 immediately. I only got $25.

Anyway, I earned my $25 with that account and added $100 yesterday. Based on my fine coupon clipping skills, I save $60 yesterday. I think I spent $93. My freezer is full and I stockpiled items for the future.

My goal is to follow Dave R. and rebuild my nest egg of $1000. I also got a new credit card and will transfer my credit card debt to that. No interest until January 2009! So, I want to transfer about $150 per month of minimum payments to this card for that period to pay them off!

One day I will figure out how to add a tracking feature but, let's just call this month the gimme. I will post what I'm doing to save and pay off debt until then.

I have picked up a couple of freelance gigs and posted some items on ebay. Those funds will pay off consumer debt.

On the stroll

Reflection

I'm trying to create a list of goals which will motivate me to pay off my debts faster.

Right now, the only motivation is to pay off the debts so that I can spend more. For me, this will lead to spending more and the debts will remain.

Today, I spent time with a spendthrift. I encouraged him to clip coupons, make a list for the grocery store and plan meals. He purchased toothpaste at Target. It was a good deal for $3. However, if he waited until tomorrow morning, he could have purchased the same thing at Ralphs for $0.50. Of course, that motivated him to pick up a Sunday newspaper and compare the grocery ads to the coupons. It would have been nice if he offered me a portion of his savings but, I am just happy that he won't throw away any money this week.

He then signed up for something called The Coupon Game. I don't know how this works (if you know, please explain it to me). It looked as if he had an old list . . like I said, I don't understand the site.

If you have not already guessed, I am a coupon clipper. My methods are simple: subscribe to the Sunday newspaper, clip coupons for items that I use or am interested in, keep coupons in a folder, keep coupons that expire at the end of the current month in a separate envelope or in my coupon organizer, throw away expired coupons at the end of each month. Works for me and takes less than an hour each week.

There are other methods and some people keep a pricing notebook. I don't because I know which items are at good prices and which are lower at other stores.

Clip some coupons and save some money,

On the stroll

October is a great time to start seriously paying off debt and saving

I'm a mid thirties professional with under $10K in credit card debt but over $100K in educational loans. Therefore, I am on the stroll for school loans.

I realized that I could take a weekend trip each month, buy a newer car or simply save more for retirement with the $700 in loans made to Sallie Mae or Wells Fargo.

Not long ago, I had this idea that after grad school, I would have free time, take extravagant trips and never think about grad school. Then, my wonderful school gave me this letter which said that I owed almost $200K in loans! Whoa, Nelly. Where did that come from?

Of course, they overestimated. I consolidated but, two loans were left out of the mix. I guess they were unsubsidized or someone was making too much money to let them go . . . this is why Sallie Mae is a pimp.

Anyway, I hope that I can share some moneymaking and moneysaving ideas with you.

On the stroll
